Sun Cellular in the Philippines

Permalink 07:18:21 am, Categories: Rant and Rave, Geek stuff, 650 words

So I am a South African and I find myself in Manila in the Far East, so anything I write below is based on my experience of Internet in South Africa and comparing it to an Internet service provider in the Philippines called “Sun Cellular”.

Let me get right to the point. Under no circumstances unless you are desperate and have no choice use them as an Internet service provider.

Some tech info. I have 97% signal. I have nothing else running, the computer I am using is well setup and clean.

Here are my reasons:

1) The advertise speeds of up to 2000kbs. This is a marketing scam. What they mean is for about an hour a day you will get 200Kbs, then the rest of the time your connection is strangled at a constant (and I mean it hardly waivers unless it gets worse) 20Kbs. You might as well go dial-up.

2) Their service and web support is pretty much non-existent. They clearly got a bunch of kids together with crayons to build their website. They say if it looks cheap it probably is… in this case Sun Cellular both look and are cheap. Don’t expect to have a modern day support system, just a call desk full of people with no technical ability.

3) Don’t expect to play any games like World of Warcraft or DOTA. It seems the trained monkeys who work at Sun Cellular don’t know how to prioritize legitimate traffic. Let me put it this way, I pay more for my World of Warcraft subscription than I do for my Internet… so I am forking out a lot of money for this. Its legal LOW BANDWIDTH legitimate traffic. Playing World of Warcraft requires a constant stable stream of data (it’s a very tiny insignificant amount)… but Sun Cellular techies are unable to identify legitimate traffic from p2p traffic.

If you play WOW, expect your internet connection to drop around 50 times a night.

4) Your internet connect gets shaped, mangled and perverted in many ways. There is no routable IP address if you want to run services, there is no real quality of service.

5) Don’t expect to browse websites like YouTube, listen to streaming audio, or most things you would use an Internet connection for. Forget about it. Get another provider if you actually want to use the Internet for more than just browsing Facebook at slow speeds.

6) Don’t expect to be able to run VoIP services on Sun Cellular. A VoIP connection uses more bandwidth than my game of WoW… so you can imagine how terrible this important service runs on their network.

In my opinion there are only three types of Sun Cellular clients. Those that don’t know any better so continue to use them. Those that are desperate and have no other choice… and prostitutes. I say prostitutes because the only reason you would continue to use them as an Internet service provider is because you like being f##ked.

To the management at Sun Cellular. WAKE THE HECK UP! Even Africa provides better quality Internet than you do! Hire people with real experience and know how, and don’t over subscribe your network!

To everyone else. My suggestion is use a DSL provider like PLDT:
http://www.myworldmydsl.com/

Currently I am paying 799 pesos for “unlimited” (what they mean to say is “strangled and throttled to dial up speeds) Internet. When you get the bill at the end of the month there is also however an extra 200 peso (what I call) “mystery charge. So in all and all you are paying 1099 peso for a terrible connection.

Rather get PLDT Mydsl for 999 pesos (at a constant 512kbs).

If you are wondering where I got the time to write all of this, it’s pretty simple. Sun Cellular’s service is so terrible; I am unable to do anything else.

Laughing at the Russian "Media Government thing"

Permalink 11:40:56 am, Categories: Current Events and News, 748 words

You can say a lot of good and bad things about Russia... some good things about its people and history.. mostly bad things about its leaders. One thing that has always fascinated me is propaganda. I love looking at all sides... looking at how they craft their stories and news sources and comparing the data.

So today I am browsing pravada.ru. One of Russia`s largest online news sources. Call it their version of CNN or something. When you browse the website you instantly see the influence of the Russian government in their news media. Let me give you a couple of examples.

Right off the the bat you notice theres something different about this "news source"... firstly... its the first online newspaper that seems to advertise and be a show point for military weapons. Its a lot like reading a Military website.. infused with People magazine.

On this English translation I find three examples of Russian penis comparison :
http://english.pravda.ru/russia/kremlin/11-08-2009/108764-russia_ukraine-0

I cant ever remember reading CNN or BBC and see`ing so many examples of trying to show off its (rather carp) military weapons.

The next thing you will notice are several very beautiful mostly Russian woman in almost no clothing. Hmmm.. weapons and woman... now dont get me wrong, I as much as the next chap enjoy looking and learning about both.. but not really from my daily newspaper.

So I follow the link in the URL I mentioned earlier and I moved onto another Russian "news" website.. called "MoscowTopNews".... and guess what.. theres ever more weapons and even more scantly clad woman.

http://www.moscowtopnews.com/?area=postView&id=922
I guess missile envy does come from being small ;)

Okay, laughable content aside.. just read the news articles. They are so badly written I think someone in Moscow just pushed them through Google Translate and hoped for the best.

What I find more interesting is how the articles are worded and the general nature of the articles. They all appear to attack anyone who disagrees with the Kremlin on several different levels. They all seem extremely polarized as well! Bugger ANY kind of objective journalism or even an attempt at objective journalism. You can see they are concentrated media campaigns against whoever has their goat at the moment.

If its about Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia, America, Britain, Poland or any one of several other countries... basically just about every single article will be in some way defamatory of their targets. Theres basically no neutral news or positive news of those countries whatsoever (though I am not including the sports or weather sections).

I wont lie.. browsing through their science section is the funniest thing ever. I honestly for the light of me.. dont know if they are being serious, stupid or having fun there... but at the very least its a joke at the worst.. its still a joke.

A "science photo" http://english.pravda.ru/photo/report/muzei-966/

What I do notice is the same adverts, same stories and same spelling mistakes across several of their websites.

For instance, both pravada and moscowtopnews point (with an advert stating "Russia designs new destructive weapon") to the same "Georgian Times" websites. Which is basically a Russian made website pretending to be Georgian... and basically ragging Georgia but supporting the illegal countries of South Ossetia and Abkhazia (the parts of Georgia Russia recently conquered).

Its absolutely an amazing journey reading through Russian news. However.. even though its all very entertaining to read and follow I just cant get around at how stupid their propaganda machine is. Its so obvious and so dumb I really cant understand how Russian Intelligence could be so thick. Its like 0 thought actually when into presentation and trying to cover their dishonesty.

Anyone with half a brain can see that is government controlled hate and news speech.

Sure, we might be constantly subjected to all kinds of propaganda from different directions, but Russia takes the Crayon Cake when it comes to child like attempt at media control.

My advice to Putins rather backwards FSB.. hire someone with some kinda media intelligence folks. My personal advice to you on how to spin a story would be to hire one of the many "sell-my-ma" lawyer companies out there (like Schillings Lawyers). You clearly have no clue how to do the job so you really need to get this sorted if anyone is going to take you seriously.

The Tyrant of Telecommunications is dead.

Permalink 01:35:52 am, Categories: Current Events and News, 153 words

Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, infamously known as Poison Ivy died on Monday 6th of April 2009. I tried to think of some nice things to say about her, but every time I still think of her my blood boils.

Her stupidity, her greed, her selling out to the corporations to make herself fatter will not be forgotten. Her wealth came at the expense of the blood of South Africans. I know one should traditionally be respectful of the dead, but how is one respectful to someone who exploited and raped a countries communications industry?

We can only hope that the dark age of South African telecommunications is over with the passing away of Poison Ivy. There is an excited buzz of elation and expectation with this change and South Africans are starting to get excited about the future.

Let history not forget her crimes against the people.
