Linux Ubuntu Berly Desktop vs Windows Vista Aero

Permalink 11:51:24 am, Categories: Current Events and News, Views and Reviews, Geek stuff, YouTube, 101 words

I came across this clip in the local MyADSL forums showing a comparrison between the Linux Ubuntu Beryl desktop look vs that of the new Windows Vista Aero desktop.

As you can see by the video clip, Vista Aero stands no chance against the vastly superior Ubuntu's Beryl desktop. Not only can Beryl degrade itself to look as simple as Aero, Beryl clearly shows that it surpasses Aero in just about everything. With fantastic new concepts for your desktop that are out of this world, there is simply no reason why not to switch to Ubuntu.

Otherwise, go Ubuntu all the way, proud to Be a Saffa!!

This aint the Times mate. This is my blog with my opinion, and if you think I am being sarcastic I would say you should try out Ubuntu and Beryl.

Hey, I'm a big Ubuntu fan! Have been using Linux since 1998. Had a stint as a Debian Developer even. Haven't tried Beryl yet though, I have no need for it. (And it isn't part of the default Ubuntu install yet.)

Eye candy is not what it is really about for the people in my life. I have my whole family using Ubuntu, but that's because I refuse to support Windows. ;) It does mean I see more clearly what hindrances there are to mass adoption.

Nic: yea, who knows. That was with a pre-release demo of Windows 95. Bill, I think it was Bill, made the wonderful comment "This must be why they're not shipping Windows 95 yet." An absolute classic.

Hi there Hugo. I understand your perspective now. A lot of my mates are dev people and for some reason Gnome works for them. Personally, I am a KDE kinda guy, and so prefer the "flash". Not only must my desktop be functional is must also look very cool. Different strokes and all that jazz.

My mom is a Gnome person and wont install Beryl. All she requires is the functionality, I on the other hand require a spinning cube as my desktop while I am listening to Amarok play my music.

I suppose you would find the same in Windows. Some people prefer that simple classic look in Windows, other people prefer transparent borders. That aside I did discuss some other aspects of Ubuntu in the past. Most noticeably how easy my mom was able to learn Adept Packet Manager. Its a god send for most people.

Thanks for your posts.

I just did try out Ubuntu, in fact I still am, posting this right now from Ubuntu. My experience so far has not been very at all. I'm not really trying out anything fancy because it's on a laptop with integrated graphics.

If you think Beryl is cool you should check out Metisse as well.

Check out the URL for my post on my whole Ubuntu experience. It's far too long and I've found even more things that need fixing...

Interesting Video. Thank you for sharing.
Unfortunately Linux in general is still far from being integrated in general society. No matter hop pretty, cool, feature rich, or even free it is, most people will not make the switch. It is the same reason people are still using AOL.
A friend of mine bought a Dodge Viper a couple of years ago. He is an excellent driver. He offered me to take if for a drive. Ultimately, I did not have his skill to fully appreciate the Viper's V12. My point, for now, Linux might be the Viper, but most users don't have the skill, patience or ability to make the switch. I for one have to work on Windows all day since I am a .NET developer. When at home, I get to play with Linux, LAMP etc.

Since it is your blog ;-), what is your opinion on switching the general public?

Hi there,

Thank you for responding. I have heard the car analogy regarding linux about 20 times over the last 5 years so I am very familiar with it. In case you have missed the last year of linux and Ubuntu, your Dodge Viper, while still having the horse power of the Viper, its become easier to drive then one of those terribly over priced new VW Beatles.

My mom uses Ubuntu these days and she is as technically inclined as an asthmatic newt. The only shortcoming I have noticed in Ubuntu vs Vista or XP, is that there is not enough native game support for linux, and getting windows games to run on Ubuntu requires some of those advanced driving skills you were talking about.

It has also been shown in a study that first time computer users are able to pick up Ubuntu faster than they are able to pick up Windows.

My opinion re switching depends on a persons requirements. I would not advise a gamer to switch over, but for production or corporate use I would highly recommend it.

I agree with you on it has become easier. The problem is getting the general population to get their hands on it to begin with. Did you install and configure Linux for your mother? Dell here in the USA is starting to ship Linux (Ubuntu) pre-installed on some of their PC's which is a great step. My point is, if that continues, Linux will have a great opportunity in the home, but I have a feeling the people who are going to buy those machines will not be your general home user. Perhaps is might be different in different countries. Here in the US you can get a Vista PC for as low as $299. For most people that is pretty inexpensive. For a little more sophisticated ($$$) user, Apple becomes an options since it has the "cool" factor for the non-technical crowd. Don't get me wrong, I love Linux /Gnu, but I don't see it taking off..just yet.

One very positive thing going for Linux is the publicity Mark S. has brought to it, making Ubuntu a very common name in Colleges and Universities. It also gave people looking to switch to Linux a distro to check out, instead of going through the hundreds of options just to find the right one. I would say, Ubuntu of all the distros probably has positioned itself to be the one to take on Win and Apple.

My mom did not buy a PC :D She bought a new MAC notebook, formatted it and I talked her through the whole 5 min install on the phone, its required little beyond clicking "next".

She phones me less these days for free support :)
